Bob Fields, Artist & Opinionator

Editorial & Promotional: for the target audience

Do it or not. It's your choice

My art career was actualized with a series of editorial illustrations completed for the Detroit Magazine in the early nineteen seventies. My very first assignment demonstrated a basic difference between fine art and art done for a client, in this case an illustration interpreting a manuscript. The piece was completed by deadline, but there was one offensive element in the composition that had to go. My choice was to make the compromise or not get paid. It was my very first editorial illustration. I really wanted to get into print, so I sold out. It only hurt for a little while.

Ideas, Image and marketing

Art and design can coexist, but in the professional design dynamic, business almost always comes first. Although many think that art is money, this is a truth that is not as pervasive in fine art.

While the projects on this page involve varied situations and applications, they were all developed to solve a specific problem for a pertinent client.
