An ongoing exploration: Environmentals
Basic earth elements
If one considers the basic earth elements of fire, air, earth, and water, concepts and ideas relating to the natural environment almost automatically follow.
My first foray into this theme is represented by a group of prints developed in the early seventies. They are hand pulled serigraphs procuced in very limited quantities.
In and about the environment
The murals represented in this section were completed during the mid nineteen seventies and into the early eighties. The first one was a commission funded by the National Endowment of the Arts and was the winning design in a competition sponsored by the city of Memphis, Tennessee. The three Blacksburg murals were partially funded by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
The hard edge linear style used in the murals would be picked up again in the series of paintings using rainbow imagery. They are another expression of air and fire themes derived from the earth elements.
