The Box Spring Fire Sessions
Box springs from a mattress set obtained at a local thrift shop provided a perfect platform to manipulate, localize, and control fire as an artistic medium. Lighter fluid on board or paper became the preferred means of combustion. Controlling the rate, progression, and breath of the burn was also a concern.
The fire sessions was almost too much fun due to the near pyromaniacal state that the participants all too willingly adopted during the burning stages of this project.
Some of the paintings were partially burned and the paint applied after the fact to achieve a "tromp l'oeil" combination. The photographs were used as source material to complete the visual statement.
In fire session #2 the papers are composed and layered after they are manipulated by fire and paint. This is partially documented in the series of photos at the right.
